His sister, Jackie, currently lives in Greensboro, NC with her husband, Michael, who also happens to manage his website. John has always been a big family guy and is always involving his family in his fishing adventures. Without the support of his family John would not be where he is today. He appreciates everything they do for him is thankful that they are supporting him in chasing his dream of making a career of being a professional angler. In addition to his immediate family, John's uncle has played a huge role in his fishing career. His Uncle Jimmy had pole in John's hands by the time he was 5 years old. Jim has taken John bass fishing and deep sea fishing his entire life and got him hooked on the life of being a fisherman. Jimmy has continued to support John and his currently one of his sponsors.

John graduated from Shelby County High School in 2010. Throughout his high school years, John was very active in athletics, including soccer, basketball, football, golf, and baseball. He played varsity baseball (catcher) all five years, earning the chance to play in two state championship series. Upon graduating, John decided to continue his eduction at Georgetown College in Kentucky on a baseball and academic scholarship. He eventually chose to put a hold on his baseball career his sophomore year and pursue one of his true passions by joining the fishing team. John was also associated with the Kappa Alpha Order fraternity of Georgetown College. In the Spring of 2014, John graduated cum laude from Georgetown, earning a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with concentration in finance.

John got his first boat when he was 16 years old, and compteted in some small local tournaments. It wasn't until college fishing when John really matured as an angler. The Georgetown College fishing team was ranked first for most of the 2012 & 2013 season in the Cabelas School of the Year rankings. They competed and qualified in the 2013 FLW Collegiate National Championship as well as the 2013 & 2014 Bassmaster National Championship and took home many top 5 and top 10 finishes along the way. Upon graduating, John decided he wanted to try and make fishing a profession. In the beginning of 2015 he joined forces with Texas Roadhouse and took on his rookie season on the Walmart FLW Tour and the Bassmaster Opens. The 2015 season was a near perfect rookie season for John, as he took home the FLW Co-Angler of the Year title with 5 finishes within the Top 10, ending with his first appearance at the Forrest Wood Cup. In 2016 and 2017, John competed against the top 111 anglers in the world in the Bassmaster Elite Series, after qualifying for the circuit in 2015 through the Bass Pro Shops Northern Opens. Now, he returns to the FLW Tour on the professional side for his 2018 season with hopes of finishing atop the standing for Angler of the Year and making a second Forrest Wood Cup appearance.
