FAMILY

John Hunter was born and raised in Shelbyville, Kentucky. He is one of two children of John and Traci Hunter. His sister, Jackie, currently lives in Greensboro, NC with her husband, Michael, who also happens to manage his website. John has always been a big family guy and is always involving his family in his fishing adventures. Without the support of his family John would not be where he is today. He appreciates everything they do for him is thankful that they are supporting him in chasing his dream of making a career of being a professional angler. In addition to his immediate family, John's uncle has played a huge role in his fishing career. His Uncle Jimmy had pole in John's hands by the time he was 5 years old.

 

EDUCATION

John graduated from Shelby County High School in 2010. Throughout his high school years, John was very active in athletics, including soccer, basketball, football, golf, and baseball. He played varsity baseball (catcher) all five years, earning the chance to play in two state championship series. Upon graduating, John decided to continue his eduction at Georgetown College in Kentucky on a baseball and academic scholarship. He eventually chose to put a hold on his baseball career his sophomore year and pursue one of his true passions by joining the fishing team. John was also associated with the Kappa Alpha Order of Georgetown College. In the Spring of 2014, John graduated cum laude from Georgetown, earning a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with concentration in finance.

 

FISHING

John got his first boat when he was 16 years old, and competed in some small local tournaments. It wasn't until college fishing when John really matured as an angler. He competed for the Georgetown College Fishing Team. Upon his time at Georgetown, he qualified for the 2013 FLW Collegiate National Championship as well as the 2013 & 2014 Bassmaster National Championship and took home many top 5 and top 10 finishes along the way. John also finished his college career with a top 3 duo ranking in the country.  Upon graduating, John decided he wanted to try and make fishing a profession. In the beginning of 2015, he joined forces with Texas Roadhouse and took on his rookie season on the Walmart FLW Tour and the Bassmaster Opens. The 2015 season was a near perfect rookie season for John, as he took home the FLW Co-Angler of the Year title with 5 finishes within the Top 10, ending with his first appearance at the Forrest Wood Cup. In 2016 and 2017, John competed against the top 111 anglers in the world in the Bassmaster Elite Series, after qualifying for the circuit in 2015 through the Bass Pro Shops Northern Opens. John then went on to fish the MLF Pro Circuit (former FLW tour) from 2018 to 2022. In 2022 John qualified to fish the 2023 MLF Bass Pro Tour. In February he will begin competing in the Major League Fishing BPT against the top 80 anglers in the world.
